Next SQPDT Supplier Corrective Action Forum:
The next SQPDT Supplier Corrective Action Forum was scheduled for December 3-4, 2009 at the Clarion Inn Hotel in Fort Myers, Florida. All Nuclear Power Plant individuals who are interested Supplier Quality Performance are invited to attend.

SQPDT Year 2008 In Review:

  • There are currently 30 Nuclear Power Plants from 21 different Nuclear Power Plant sites providing data to the SQPDT web site. Florida Power and Light and Entergy Operations added Nuclear Sites during 2008. Several other Nuclear Organization were interested in becoming an SQPDT Member in 2008, but opted to hold off for now. SQPDT IS WORKING!

  • 631 new suppliers were added to the SQPDT Supplier list in 2008, bringing the total number of suppliers to 5,614 for the beginning of 2009. SQPDT IS WORKING!

  • 2775 Web Site Log On in 2008 - SQPDT IS WORKING!
1788 Web Site Log On in 2007
2064 Web Site Log On in 2006

  • 6.4 % Supplier Responsible Deficient in 2008 - SQPDT IS WORKING!
    7.3 % Supplier Responsible Deficient in 2007
    8.8 % Supplier Responsible Deficient in 2006

  • 24,180 Total Inspections in 2008 - SQPDT IS WORKING!
    18,630 Total Inspections in 2007
    23,428 Total Inspections in 2006

  • There are 13 of the 23 Suppliers who received SQPDT Supplier Joint Corrective Action in 2008 who will NOT be on the list for SQPDT Joint Supplier Corrective Action in 2009. That is a Success Rate of 56.5% in 2008. In 2007 the Success Rate was 52.0%. SQPDT IS WORKING!

  • A total of 24,180 lots of product were inspected during 2008 with an average supplier responsible deficiency rate of 6.4%. The increase in the number of lots inspected during 2008 and the improved Supplier Quality Performance is attributed to the data received from 9 additional Nuclear Plants providing data to the SQPDT Web Server and continuing efforts to obtain SQPDT Joint Supplier Corrective Action. This decrease in Supplier Responsible deficiencies represents a marked improvement during the year 2008. SQPDT IS WORKING!

  • During 2008, 21 suppliers met the revised criteria for Poor Performing Suppliers and will be provided the opportunity to receive SQPDT Joint Supplier Corrective Action. The revised criterion is 45 or more lots of product or services to 6 or more Nuclear Power Plant sites with a 7% or greater Supplier Responsible Deficiency Rate. As a result of the decrease in eligible Suppliers for SQPDT Joint Supplier Corrective Action, the Supplier Responsible Deficiency Rate was reduced to 7% or greater and 45 lots for 2008. The goal is to have all Nuclear Suppliers managing their Quality Performance Rating below 5%. SQPDT IS WORKING!

SQPDT 2008 Overall Supplier Corrective Action Success Rate was 13-23 (57 %). SQPDT 2007 Overall Supplier Corrective Action Success Rate was 14-27 (52 %). SQPDT IS WORKING!

Supplier Quality Performance Recognition Award:
The SQPDT group agreed to maintain the Supplier Recognition Award at 2% or less Supplier Responsible Deficiencies with 45 or more lots of product sent to 6 or more SQPDT member's Nuclear Power Plant sites. There were two suppliers in 2008, which met the criterion. They were Wylie Laboratories in Huntsville, Alabama and Scientech-EGS Division CWFC in Huntsville, Alabama.

SQPDT IS WORKING! 18 suppliers met the standard criteria for Poor Performing Suppliers and will be provided the opportunity to receive SQPDT Joint Supplier Corrective Action. The standard criterion is 50 or more lots of product or services to 6 or more Nuclear Power Plant sites with an 8% or greater Supplier Responsible Deficiency Rate. As a result of the decrease in eligible Suppliers for SQPDT Joint Supplier Corrective Action, the Supplier Responsible Deficiency Rate was reduced to 7% or greater for 2008. The goal is to have all Nuclear Suppliers managing their Quality Performance Rating below 5%.

December, 2007 There was 52% (14 of 27) of the 2006 poorest quality performing suppliers who did not make the standard SQPDT Joint Supplier Corrective Action list in 2007. Entergy Nuclear Northeast's 2005 "Supplier Information Program" ABZ Data Services developed a "Supplier Information Program" for John McNamara at Entergy Nuclear Northeast that went into "Production" on September 30, 2005. The program allows anyone from Entergy Nuclear Northeast access to enter any information regarding any supplier. It provides for "Positive", "Neutral", or "Negative" input. The Supplier Information Program database is attached to the SQPDT Supplier Database. Reporting functions allows Entergy Nuclear Northeast individuals to filter by various criteria including "Supplier SQPDT Number", "Supplier Name", "Entry Site", "Entered By", "Type Of Entry (Positive/Negative/Neutral)", and a "Date Range". The "Comment" section of the program will handle 999 pages of content. In keeping with the ABZ Data Services tradition, it functioned perfectly the first time. The web server programming functions of this effort was subcontracted to Ethany Corporation.

SQPDT 2005 Pin-Pointing Problems SQPDT data indicates that 61% (1254 of 2056) of all of the year 2005 SQPDT member's supplier responsible deficiencies are due to various and assorted "Paperwork" issues. Note that another 31% of the lots inspected were deficient, but not the supplier's responsibility and are not reflected in the SQPDT Supplier Responsible Deficiency Rates. If the "Paperwork" problems were to go away, there would be a 3.3% supplier responsible deficiency rate reflected in the SQPDT data. That is, in all fairness, pretty darn good. To remove the "Paperwork" errors, three primary areas need to be considered. They are:

  • Utility Purchase Orders need to be understandable.
  • Order Entry at Supplier's facility need to correctly identify what is required.
  • A Complete Quality Review of finishing product prior to shipping by the supplier is necessary.

SQPDT 2005 Supplier Recognition Award The SQPDT group agreed to maintain the Supplier Recognition Award at 2% or less supplier responsible deficiencies with 50 or more lots of product sent to 6 or more member's Nuclear Power Plant sites. Three suppliers met the criteria and received the SQPDT Supplier Recognition Award for 2005. Congratulations to:

  • Crane Nuclear, Inc. - Crane Movats Division in Kennesaw, GA
  • Exelon Powerlabs - Mid Atlantic Division in Coatsville, PA
  • Target Rock - Curtiss-Wright Flow Control in East Farmingdale, NY

    SQPDT Year 2005 In Review:

  • 22 Nuclear Power Plants from 15 different Nuclear sites are providing data to the SQPDT web site.
  • 290 new suppliers were added to the SQPDT Supplier list in 2005, bringing the total number of suppliers to 4194.
  • A larger number of suppliers are now receiving their SQPDT Quality Performance Reports on-line.
  • 28% (7 of 25) of the 2004 poorest quality performing suppliers did not make the SQPDT Joint Supplier Corrective Action list in 2005.
  • In the last 3 year, 67,996 SQPDT lots of product were inspected, up 8240 lots from the 2004 totals. A total of 24, 594 lots of product were inspected during 2005 with an average supplier responsible deficiency rate of 8.4%. In 2004, the average supplier responsible deficiency rate was 9.8%. In 2003, it was 11.7%. The decrease in Supplier Responsible deficiencies represents a continuing and improving trend from year to year. SQPDT is working.
  • During 2005, 32 suppliers met the criteria for Poor Performing Suppliers and will be provided the opportunity to receive SQPDT Joint Supplier Corrective Action. The 32 Poor Performing Suppliers sent 5,871 lots to SQPDT member's Nuclear Power Plant sites. The average supplier responsible deficiency rate was 13.6% for the 32 Poorest Performers in 2005. While this is still very high, it is 6.8% less than the 20.4% average found in 2004 for the 25 Poorest Performing Suppliers. SQPDT is working.

January, 2005 Down Load The Material Inspector's Cook Book.pdf and print it out. It will provide Source Inspection and Receiving Inspectors a quick, inexpensive way to test various Metals, Finishes, and Thermoplastics. It also has a terrific Shelf Life Test Procedure. The Material Inspector's Cook Book may prove to be the best 79 pages you ever down loaded and printed out. If you don't want to print it out, just keep it on your PC for super good reference.

December, 2004 Another successful SQPDT Supplier Corrective Action Forum was held at the Holiday Inn in Fort Myers on December 2-3, 2004. The selection criteria of 50 or more lots to 6 or more Nuclear Sites with an 8 percent of greater supplier responsible deficiency rate resulted in 25 suppliers. The selected supplier were assigned to receive Joint SQPDT Supplier Corrective Action starting in January 2005. Good improvements have been seen with past Joint SQPDT Supplier Corrective Actions.

Those attending were on the back row, left to right: Mike Dakin (Ethany Corporation), Jeff Baysinger (Florida Power & Light), Michael Rogers (New Brunswick Power), and Vincent Ferretti (Entergy Nuclear Northeast). December, 2003 A "Special Award" was presented to Mark Harvey by Phil Brown for the near quantum leap in quality noted by the suppliers who were assigned to Mark following the 2002 SQPDT Supplier Corrective Action Forum. Mark discussed the need for complete and honest communications with individuals in the Supplier's organization who could command the attention of those making the errors.

December, 2003 The SQPDT Supplier Corrective Action Forum was held at the Holiday Inn-Riverwalk in Fort Myers, Florida on December 4-5, 2003. SQPDT members in attendance were (back row left to right) Vince Ferretti (Entergy Nuclear Northeast), Michael Rogers (New Brunswick Power), Mark Harvey (Seabrook), and Russ Baystr (Exelon-Retired) - (front row left to right) Mike Fox (Consumers Power-Retired), Phil Brown (ABZ), Craig Ehrenberg (Nebraska), Earl Mayhorn (Ameren/UE), Martha Brown (ABZ), and Mike Dakin (Ethany). SQPDT members not able to attend were Del Senner (Energy Northwest), Jeff Baysinger (Florida Power & Light), Terry Krause (Wolf Creek) and Mark Coren (Duke Power). Russ Baystr, Mike Dakin, and Mike Fox attended as special guests to provide insight for the gathering. Although Jeff Baysinger was unable to attend, he provided a detailed report on various FPL status items. Michael Rogers attended to observe the SQPDT process as it might apply to his organization. New Brunswick Power's Point Lepreu Nuclear Generations Station became a SQPDT member in January 2004.

For 2004 an additional group of 26 suppliers, whose Supplier Quality Performance Data Tracking was rated less than satisfactory, were identified and assignments made for SQPDT Members to obtain Corrective Action.

September, 2003 Wow! SQPDT now has 21 Nuclear Plants providing inspection date. Duke Power Company added Oconee 1,2,& 3, McGuire 1 & 2, and Catawba 1 & 2. Entergy Northeast added Indian Point 2.

In the past 3 years, the database has grown to 70,151 inspection records on receipts from 3,449 suppliers.

Our GOAL for 2004 is to add 15 more U.S. Nuclear Plants and 1 International Plant as providers of data. That should bring the total to 125,000 supplier inspection records for the prior 3 years. We do backload data when it is available from new SQPDT Plants.

December 5-6, 2002 The SQPDT Supplier Corrective Action Forum held in Fort Myers, Florida was a tremendous success. There were twenty-three suppliers who will get the opportunity to defend their poor Quality Performance record to SQPDT members. There were also two suppliers who will receive accommodation for their excellent Quality Performance record for the year 2002. The next SQPDT Supplier Corrective Action Forum is scheduled for December 4-5, 2003 in Fort Myers, Florida.

December 5, 2000 - Michael J. Fox finally got his first hole in one after 25 years. It was at the Four Lakes Golf Club in Winter Haven, Florida on December 5th, 2000. Mike has been retired from Consumers Energy since the first of September and has been playing at least 4 rounds a week at his home course. It happened on the 16th hole, a 180 yard par 3, with a brisk wind in his face around 3:00 P.M. Mike pulled out his faithful Fairway Lies 5 wood. He placed his Titleist HP Distance golf ball on his favorite Natural Colored Tee. He was wearing his Lucky Fox Valley Vineyard golf shirt he bought at Lamoka Lake, New York. After a big inhale of air, Mike held his breath and gave the ball a tremendous "Whack". Due to the normal sunny Florida day, Mike lost his ball in the sunlight. After he and his friends Gerry Cavanaugh and Jerry Sloan checked around the green for a few minutes, Mike walked across the green and happened to see something "white" out of the corner of his eye in the hole. As his friends approached, they were all so excited to see that it was Mike's ball. Congratulations Mike!
